Akis' Drink How I look after my Health We are a few friends, who with the age have developed some health problems. Amongst them are either prostate or kidneys (like myself). My case started in the beginning of March 2003 when I noticed blood in my urine. I went to my doctor who after a small examination in his clinic, he believed that on my left kidney I had a lump and water. He immediately referred me to the hospital as an outpatient for further tests and treatment. Since then I have undergone 4 MRI scans, various tests and X-rays. As of today (Sep 2005) I have not yet been discharged from the hospital’s outpatient list. I attribute this to an apparent improvement of my kidney. The most important thing is that apparently the lump has not grown and the water has disappeared. Apart from the initial session of antibiotics, I have not taken any other medication in relation to my kidney problem. Following my first MRI scan etc, and when the results were communicated to me, I was having very low morale. I spent the night, sitting in front of my computer, typing! By talking with friends that have similar health problems, I found out that some of them were drinking a “remedy” recommended, apparently, by an old man in a village of rural Greece. I had nothing to loose, as this juice is easy to make, from fresh natural vegetables. Therefore I decided to give it a try. After the first week, I already noticed an improvement to my health. So, what does this drink consist of? Ingredients: fresh carrots, tomatoes, lemon, garlic and virgin olive oil. Preparation:
For practicality (less messy), I prepare one bottle of carrot juice and one bottle of tomato juice and I keep them in the fridge (it’s easier to drink cold). I add the lemon juice fresh at the moment of preparation. About 15 minutes before my meal (breakfast, lunch & dinner) I drink one glass of this natural juice mix. Meals:
I do not smoke and I only drink a glass of wine, occasionally with a meal. After each meal I take a 15-minute walk. I started this habit together with the “remedy”. Initially, I did this for the first 3 weeks. Then I stopped for about a month. Thereafter every couple of months I take the same drink morning and evening only. Most of my friends take it much more regularly and they also feel very well. In addition to the above one more thing I did was: To convince myself to never give up and, I proved it. I am 69 years of age, I feel in good shape and I keep myself busy. I still work 8 hours a day, 6 days a week. As I am not a doctor, I cannot state that the improvement to my condition is due to this drink. Is it a combination of everything? I never mentioned to the doctors what I do. You may ask why. Most of them do not believe in these “remedies”. However, and this was vital for this decision of mine, I believed that, since my doctor hasn’t instructed me, not to eat the vegetables I use, I have nothing to worry about. The purpose of this letter is to share with you my experience that may be of assistance to you or your loved ones and, to express in my own way as chairman of the Trustees of this charity, our gratitude to all of you for your kind support. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone of you who will try my experience and would like to share with us his/hers own experience, to send me an email and tell us how they feel after the first few weeks. Reader Response - Please, feel free to send me any comments to akis@childrenofethiopia.com and I will post them below.

Prostate Cancer Lycopene & Vitamin E Tomatoes : (Lycopene) Lycopene is a substance found in tomatoes, guava, watermelon, rose hips and pink grapefruit, it is responsible for their red/pink colour. Lycopene is a powerful Antioxidant which appears to concentrate in the prostate area more so than in other parts of the body. This it is suggested, makes lycopene an ideal supplement to prevent prostate problems. Lycopene is not water soluble so adding olive oil to tomatoes allows it to be absorbed by the body. Lycopene content based in tomato foods. (mg/100g) Example : Tomato Paste 42.2 mg – Spaghetti Sauce 21.9mg – Chili Sauce 19.5mg - Tomato Ketchup 15.9mg etc.. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3703396.stm - (Vitamin E) Researches at the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, Holland, had found synthetic lycopene slowed the growth of human prostate tumours in mice. In their mice research, the Dutch scientists found a low dose of the synthetic lycopene slowed the growth of human prostate tumours implanted in the mice by over 50% by day 42 of the study, compared to mice who had not had the treatment. And when the lycopene was combined with vitamin E, it reduced the growth of tumours by up to 73%. One tablespoon of olive oil provides 8% (1.6mg) of Recommended Daily Allowance for Vitamin E. Vitamin E is also not water soluble so olive oil will allow it to be absorbed by the body. Some examples of good sources of Vitamin E : About 15 Almond dried/ Hazelnuts dried, 1 medium sweet potato, 1 table spoon Margarine (Mazola), 1 table spoon of Sunflower oil, and many more Citrus Fruits According to research carried out at the Texas A&M University Citrus Centre, and published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, the pectin found in citrus fruits may help to protect against prostate cancer. In addition to having the potential to lower blood cholesterol and balance blood sugar levels, pectin has also been shown to re-establish the inter-cell communications that are lost between cancer cells. The researches are still in the process of isolating the active ingredient, but suggest that the more bitter citrus fruits may also be the most beneficial. It is also recommended that people consume the whole of the fruit, as this is where the highest concentrations of pectin are found. Carrots The research around the relationship between carrots and prostate cancer is somewhat controversial. In some cases beta-carotene reduced the risk and in others not. However none of the results overwhelmingly discourage carrots in the diet. It is unlikely that any harm can be done by eating carrots regularly. Garlic. Plays an excellent part in the treatment of High Cholesterol and helps to combat the flew in general. Garlic and Cholesterol There are now over 12 well designed studies published around the world that confirm that Garlic in several forms can reduce cholesterol. Most recently researches in Oxford and America have published some summaries of all the good date on garlic. Garlic as lipid lowering agent – a meta analysis. Silagy CS, Neil HAW, 1994, The Journal of the Royal College of Physicians, Vol 28 No 1:39-45 The authors state that garlic supplements have an important part to play in the treatment of high cholesterol and that this paper reviews all the published and unpublished date from around the world. Overall a 12% reduction in total cholesterol was shown over a placebo and this reduction was normally evident after only 4 weeks treatment and that this was likely to persist for as long as the study was in progress. Olive Oil Allows the Lycopene and the Vitamin E to be absorbed by the body.
